What I hate About You! (Top Complaints About Memphis Clients) The companion piece to my top complaints about Memphis Lawyers. First, let me start off by saying as a group I generally love my clients. They are an interesting fun group of people who pay me money to deal with them at what is generally the least pleasant portion of their lives. That being said sometimes, well you know. So for getting top notch service from me or any other lawyer keep the following in mind.
1. Don’t return phone calls. Number 1 on the least of lawyer complaints also appears as to clients. Clients as a rule seem not to treat calls from their lawyers as important leading to great additional work and stress for the lawyers. Then they complain about the bill. Not that I mind going over the bill, I mean mistakes happen, but if you don’t get back to me then don’t complain. 2. You don’t pay me. I actually have a fairly good collection rate. Clients make a noticeable effort most of the time to see I get paid. Still when you don’t make any payments, at least token, my attention level to your case drops, precipitously. That’s not to say this is all about money, but there are plenty of people out there who will pay me who I’d rather be helping and I assume need the help more. 3. You don’t follow instructions. Why do people pay a several thousand dollar retainer and then not do what I tell them too. Then they expect me to fix the problems this causes. At the very least if you aren’t going to do something, please tell me. 4. You lie. Lying has become endemic in modern society. You not only lie to me, you lie to yourselves. When you are with me it’s a time for absolute honesty, if you are so-so committed on getting custody then it’s okay and far less expensive to tell me. This is not about judging. If you are going to lie to me for goodness sakes don’t blame me when you change your story under oath for not having gotten a good result. 5. You hear what you want to hear. I run into this all the time. It’s some sort of filtering mechanism run-amuck. Have you ever had someone ask a question that they clearly thought had a yes or no answer and then just stare at you blankly while you give the accurate response. 6. You blame me for the other people (aka judges) not following the law. I do my best really. I write memos for almost everything. Look things up. Its Memphis what can I say. 7. You expect me to get emotionally involved and take sides. I do the second, but not the first. Any lawyer who does the first would burn out fast. I’ve heard of lawyers who do it and stop once the retainer runs out.
I think that’s about it. I’m sure I’ll run into a few more being a Memphis Lawyer, but that’s it for now. I can write a smaller piece on potential clients.
